Over the last 20 years...

Since it's inception in 1998, the Australian market has used NABERS to improve buildings and workplaces because high performing buildings support more profitable and more productive businesses.

NABERS was initially known as the Australian Building Greenhouse Rating (ABGR), a rating now known as NABERS Energy. The program was renamed the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) in 2004, as the program began to expand its reach beyond energy, to water, waste and indoor environment quality.

NABERS ratings began to be used extensively in building sustainability policy at local, state and Australian government level, recognising the impressive environmental savings achieved by participants in the program.

To find out more about the policies in which NABERS is instilled within please visit the Commercial Building Disclosure website and read the NSW Government Resource Efficiency Policy.

The Power of a NABERS Rating

Getting a NABERS rating can deliver meaningful environmental benefits. Below are some of the demonstrated savings that have already been made.

Over the life of the program, we have worked with Australian businesses and workplaces to save 826,578 tonnes of CO2 emissions - that's enough to power 75,200 homes for one year.

And on average, buildings with a NABERS Water rating save 1.6 billion litres of water per year  - the same amount as Ten Mile Dam in Western Australia.

The Future of NABERS

Fast forward to 2018, we are now entering new markets to meet emerging needs. For instance, over the past 25 years the number of people living in apartments in Australia has increased by 78%. More recently, we have worked with the residential sector to deliver Australia's first energy and water certification for apartment buildings - a ground breaking project which aims to drive significant energy and water savings.

NABERS has also partnered with the Australian Government and the Green Building Council of Australia to develop a pathway for buildings to become certified as carbon neutral. We're excited to see this partnership facilitate our Governments ambitious 2050 net-zero emissions targets.

Waste is a serious issue, so we have developed the NABERS Waste Manager Platform to help businesses visualise and monitor waste and recycling data online, and turn this into a NABERS rating.

And we hope that our new Co-Assess process will reach thousands of small and medium businesses.

We've got bold ideas about where we want to be.

Together, we look forward to this future.
